This is a small but interesting meeting that will bring together scientists who used the non-human primate (NHP) model for HIV research as well as scientists who use the human model. The purpose of the meeting is to stimulate discussion between the two groups (who often work in isolation from each other) and to see what they can learn from each other. As well as an International panel of speakers the meeting is being funded by the US NIH and it is hoped that several of their scientists will also be at the meeting.
Dr. Ian McGowan – Chief Scientific Officer, Orion Biotechnology – will chair Session I: The Current Epidemic: Transmissions and Prevention Efforts; Prevention NHP Models as well as giving an invited talk on new infections and prevention efforts. This topic really sets the stage for why we need new approaches to HIV prevention including microbicides.
